Tuesday 30.4.

Our last day in Nantes started at eight in the morning, at least for me. First we were divided in to groups of four people and then we went for example to a biology lesson. The classrooms were a bit different in France than in Finland. For instance they had much better working spaces for sciences than we do and the rooms were a bit bigger, but one of the major differences was that they didn’t have their own laptops. The lesson I went to was pretty interesting because we examined a real heart of a pig.

After the lessons we went to get our luggage and headed to the nearest bus stop. At the train station of Nantes we said goodbye to our correspondents and bought some snacks from a nearby local store for the upcoming trip. The train left Nantes at approximately twelve o’clock. The trip to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport took about three hours so were there at four.
Our flight back to Finland wouldn’t departure until 8pm so we had about four hours of spare time at the airport. Even though we had so much spare time, it took us like two hours to get through check-in, bag-drop and the security check.
Before our flight back to Finland a few people bought some souvenirs from the airport and others either searched for food or waited at the gate.
After the three-hour flight back to Finland we landed at Helsinki at about eleven o’clock and that was due to a one-hour time difference. Then after that we all got our luggage and headed back to Hyvinkää.

Monday 29.4.

On Monday we had a planned program for the whole day. We left Nantes around eight by bus. First, we went to see the Salt Marshes of Guérande.

Then we visited the old town of Guérande. The guide gave us a tour around the town and told us interesting things about the town in the Middle Ages. After we had free time in the town and me and my friends had a picnic. We also bought souvenirs from a local shop.

After Guérande we left for St Nazaire to visit shipyards and the blockhaus. There was also a beautiful beach and the view of the sea was amazing! Around 4 pm we headed back to Nantes and on the way back, we stopped to buy some biscuits. The weather was nice and warm over the whole day and I had a really good time.

Weekend

On Friday we had a sleep over with Jeanne, Florine, Ivona, Reeta, Edwina and I. We played games, chilled together and ate some French foods. On Saturday we went shopping and in the evening we went to see Jeanne’s basketball game. After the game we went to dinner. The restaurant was really nice and the food was delicious.

On Sunday I went on a motorcycle ride with Jeanne’s dad. In the afternoon we went canoeing. The weather was nice and we had so much fun. After the canoeing we had a picnic and just hung out together. We were all pretty tired afterwards so we just went back to Jeanne’s place.

Weekend

When we were having dinner on Friday night, the family saw me being super tired and told me I could sleep for as long as I wanted the next morning. So I put an alarm at 9 am so I wouldn’t sleep all day. After breakfast we went to a market in the near town called Vertou. The market was beautiful. They had all kinds of fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs.
After we came home from the market we went to visit one of the islands in Nantes. There were lots of different animals from dogs to cows and another market with mainly flowers and hand-made things. We walked through the beautiful island with the family dog Gaïa, that was really excited too.

After that we didn’t do much before the evening. At 8pm we went to a laser tag with some of the other Finnish and French people. It was really cool. I had never been to a laser tag before and it was actually really fun, even though the French were so much better at it.

On Sunday we didn’t do anything really until after lunch. After lunch we went to see a castle that was built during the Middle Ages. The castle was in a town called Clisson. There wasn’t much of it left since it was so old. It was mainly just ruin but it was still really cool to see!

Our weekend was pretty chill since the parents in the family worked around the clock so they really just wanted to take it easy during the weekend.
Overall my weekend was amazing and I saw so many cool things and had so much fun.

Weekend

On the weekend me, my correspondent Maureen and her family went to La Baule. They had a house close to the beach. We were there the whole weekend. On Saturday we went to the marketplace where I got a traditional bowl and a flag for souvenirs from the family. After that we went to walk along the beach. The weather was kind of windy but it looked beautiful. We went to eat lunch at Le Croisic in to a restaurant by the beach. We ate galettes and for dessert, crepes. When we had eaten, we walked along the beach and the family showed me around the city. We also went to get milkshakes after. On Sunday morning we woke up at nine then ate breakfast and went to walk outside. We went again to the marketplace to buy food. Then we ate lunch at the house made with the items just bought. Later we met up with Leena and her correspondent and their family. Together we went to a cafe and shopping. After that, we went back to the house to meet up with Maureen's relatives. They were really nice and polite. We talked with the relatives for a little while, then we took off and went back to Nantes. Back at home we ate dinner and went to sleep. Overall the weekend was great.

Weekend

Sunday 28.4
At the weekends we could sleep longer because there was no school. Usually we had to wake up at least half past seven. But on weekends we could sleep for how long we wanted. After we woke, we had breakfast. We ate cereal and French bread.
After all the morning things and a few games of Apex Legends we left for Pornic. There we went to see the Atlantic Ocean and the beach. I got a few of good pictures from the beach. There were also weird fishing houses that were small and had a net hanging from some sort of a crane. I think they work when the sea level rises then they can lower the net and use it as a regular fishing net. I have no confirmation if they work like this, but I would imagine them working at least some similar way.
After all the sightseeing we decided to eat. We ate French bread and we filled them with different kinds of meat and vegetables. They were really good. We also drank ice tea from soda cans. It was weird because I have gotten used to drinking soda or some other sparkling drinks from the soda cans. But now there was no sparkles and it also was tea that I was drinking. Through and through a new experience.
After we ate, we did a little more sightseeing. At that point it was getting really late and we decided to go back home. At home we ate quiche Lorraine. It gets its name from a place called Lorraine, at least that's what they told me. The pie was really good. We also ate French bread. They eat French bread at every meal. After the meal it was time to go to bed, because the next day we had to wake up at twenty past six. So really early in the morning.

Weekend

the burger place

We did a lot of amazing things during the weekend in Nantes. On Saturday us, Alisa and our correspondents met at the bus terminal in Nantes. After everyone had arrived there, we headed to a burger restaurant called “Roadside”. We ate outside since the weather was quite sunny and pretty. The food was very good, and we sat there for a good hour or two.

the castle
We were very full and a little tired after eating but we went to the castle of the dukes of Brittany which is situated in the center of Nantes. In the castle some of the other people who were in the project came with us and we went for a quick little tour around the castle. The correspondents would’ve wanted to go from a slide that’s on the side of the castle, but it was closed so we couldn’t.

the sightseeing building
From the castle we walked in the streets of the beautiful Nantes and stopped in a few shops to get some souvenirs for us and the other Finnish students. Next, we went to a sightseeing tower called “le nid”. It was very windy already on the ground so when we got up with the elevator and went outside, the wind was so bad that if you would’ve let go one of your things it would’ve flown away. Outside we were told that there were some eggs painted on the roofs of some buildings in the town and we were supposed to find them all. We only found two out of eight. After being long enough in the wind outside we decided to go back in the building. We also went back because the other correspondents who came with us after the food had to go.

the boat trip
After they had left, us six still stayed up and we drank small juice drinks. Then suddenly right after we had drunk the drinks, the French correspondents told us that we were in a hurry because we only had fifteen minutes time to go to the harbor since our boat to the other side of the river called Loire was leaving then. Our pairs also said that we had to take two trams and we had seven stops before we were there, so we really were in a hurry. (We actually ended up running to where the second tram left because we didn’t have enough time to wait for the first one.) When we got to the harbor the boat had just got off the wharf, but they stopped the motors so that we could hop in.

After a few setbacks we got to the other side of the river and looked for a bus to go to one of our correspondents whose name is Lise. We found the bus, went with it for a while and then from one stop Lise's father came to pick us up and we went to their house. The house is big and outside they have this cute little cottage that they rent for people to live in for short periods of time. So, us six went there to sleep the night.

During the evening and night in the cottage we just played some games, talked and ate some good food. When we started to be overly tired, we decided to go make our beds and went to sleep.

the market place
On Sunday we woke up in the cottage and went to Lise’s home to eat breakfast. It was a normal French sweet breakfast. After everyone had eaten, we went to the marketplace in the village center. There were a lot of different stalls where were sold for example leather goods, pet accessory and of course, some food. In the meantime, Lise’s mother and little sister had been swimming. We had some time left after shopping, so we went to a nearby playground where was a children’s playing track from the Finnish company called “Lappset”.

the market place
After that we all went back to Lise. Her mother started to cook for us. As the starters, we had Saucisson-sausage, salty crepes and small deep-fried cheese and ham balls. For the main course we had a whole small fish. The meat was white, and skin was pink. (We don’t know what the fish was called.) For the dessert we had some strawberry pie that we had bought from the bakery earlier. And it was so good.
the canoeing place

After lunch we went to a canoeing place. In addition to us two and Alisa, there were seven other Finnish students and our correspondents. Also, with us there were the mothers of Lucie and Lise. The place where we were canoeing was in northern Nantes and the river was called Erdre. In total we canoed for two hours and the total trip was about three kilometers long. After that we had a little snack break. Then all the Finnish students and their correspondents left to their own homes. It was quite late, so we just went home, ate some dinner and then were hanging out with our hosting families and then went to sleep.

Ada & Aura

Weekend

My Saturday morning started with a breakfast after a long night of sleep.
I started to do a little bit of my homework after breakfast.
After a little lunch, I and my correspondent left towards the centre of Nantes.
The castle
We met with Milja and her correspondent in the bus, and later with Lisa and her correspondent.
We went to see the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany. Inside the castle we met Aura, Alisa, Ada and their correspondents. We walked through the castle in a quite big group. The castle was very beautiful, not to mention the view.

The centre
After the visit of the castle, we went shopping, for example to Hema and Bershka. The day in the centre ended with a visit to a vantage tower, and the view from there was amazing! We could see the whole Nantes!
The vantage tower
After the visit in the vantage tower our ways with Aura, Alisa and Ada separated. We went with Milja and Lisa to my correspondent’s place and had a sleepover. We ate pizza, played a game and watched a film together. It was a fun day!

 Tuuli
The view from the vantage tower

My Sunday morning started at Tuuli’s correspondent’s place. We had a wonderful breakfast with croissants, nutella and everything you could imagine.
After the breakfast my correspondent’s mother came and picked us up at Tuuli’s correspondent’s place. Pretty soon after that we went to a crepe restaurant. Obviously, we ate crepes but also huge portions of ice cream.

After the lunch we were in a bit of a hurry to go canoeing with a bunch of Finnish students and their correspondents. There were Tuuli, Aura, Alisa and Ada among others. We spent quite a long time there and had a really good time.
After the canoeing we drove home by car, and not longer than in five minutes went to my correspondent’s grandmother to eat dinner. She was a really nice person and spoke very good English, which I wasn’t expecting at all. She had cooked chicken and it was really good.
After that we just drove home and went to sleep. It was a really fun weekend with good company!
Unfortunately, I didn’t remember to take more pictures.

Weekend

27.4.
I spent Saturday with my host family. We ate good food at home. Later on that day we went to a marketplace. The traffic was so bad, but luckily I like just driving around. The marketplace was a big hall and it was partly outdoors. There were fish, vegetables, crêpes, food and more food. After that I tried to catch up with my homework, and then it was already dinner time.

28.4.
On the second day of the weekend, we went to an island called Noirmoutier-en-l’Île. First we walked around the place and ate. After eating, we loaned bikes and went cycling. First we went to a beach, and I was so excited to see the Atlantic Ocean! It was simply beautiful. I collected lots of shells here and there. We cycled around the village and there were some really impressive, Mediterranean-style houses! At the end of the day I was so tired and cold but it was all worth it. When we headed back home, we took a different kind of route. On rising tide you couldn’t go on the road because it was underwater. But when it was low tide, it was a road again!

Weekend

On Friday afternoon a couple of Finnish students had come to my correspondent's place and we had a sleepover, so we spent the Saturday morning together. We didn’t have anything planned for the morning so we just slept-in and hung out with our French correspondents. Around noon we all went to the shopping center to buy some clothes and souvenirs and to also take some pictures. Then we went to see one of the French student's basketball match. On our way to the basketball match we saw a real fun French way to park cars. I guess there weren’t enough parking space because almost all the traffic circles that we saw were filled with parked cars. After the match we went to a nice restaurant where we hung out and ate really good food. On Sunday I spent the morning with my host family and then we also went canoeing with a big group of Finnish and French students. The canoeing was extremely fun, and it was really nice that the French students had arranged that for us. After the canoeing I was already pretty tired, so we just spent the rest of the night at my correspondent’s house.

Weekend

I lived in family of five. In my family there were three brothers and parents. We lived in detached house close to the school named Versatile Lycee Les Bourdonnieres. Matthieu, my exchange student pair is studying in that school.

Saturday 27.4

In the morning we were just chilling and eating. I woke up about 10 o’clock and I ate my breakfast. For the breakfast I had croissant and French chocolate bread (in French: “pain au chocolat”) and a banana. After that I played guitar and Matthieu played piano. Then we ate our lunch with whole family. About 2 o’clock we left to the center of Nantes. We walked to the bus stop, which was located close to our school. There we met Jaakko and Tuomas with their exchange student friends. We went to the shopping center named Beaulieu. There we bought drinks and we were just spending time. Later we met Anton and his exchange student at shopping center. About 4 o’clock we went to eat to Kentucky Fried Chicken (Also known as KFC) to eat. Then we took a bus to the laser war game hall. We met Salla and her exchange student friend front of the game hall. At the game hall we first played air hockey and billiards before we began to play the laser game. Then it was time to start a laser war. First game we played Finland against France. France was dominating us the whole game and we had no chance to win. It was a humiliating defeat. After 20 minutes of play we had a little break before next match. We also decided to balance the teams. Second match was better, although we still lost it. After laser games we went to eat to KFC again. Then everyone left to their own homes about 11 o’clock.

Sunday 28.4

The Sunday morning was like Saturday morning, except that I had a baguette for breakfast. After lunch we left to the beach. The beach was located 45 minutes’ drive from my host family’s home. On the way to the beach my exchange student taught me how to solve a Rubik’s cube. At first, we went to the smallish beach and we tried to fly a kite, but it wasn’t windy enough, so it wasn’t possible. Then we moved to another beach, which was more like a harbor. The harbor area was old, beautiful and impressed. There was elderly boats and sailboats. We bought ice cream from a cafeteria. My host family told me that they always tend to buy ice cream from that specific harbor. We made about 45 minutes’ walk in the harbor. After that we left to third beach, which was a larger beach than the previous ones. There we were able to fly a kite. It was my first time flying a kite and I really enjoyed it. My exchange student also taught me, how to do cool tricks with a kite. We were there about an hour and then we left back to the home. Then we ate the lunch and were chilling before we went to sleep.

Friday 26.4.

Friday was the day that we got to know the city of Nantes better. In the morning we went to the city center and later on visited the Jules Verne Museum. After the museum, we saw the Slavery Memorial, the Hangar à Bananes and the Elephant. After the sightseeing tour, we settled into a nice park where we ate lunch. After lunch, we had some free time before we went to the Museum of Art of Nantes. The museum had a broad collection of art through the Middle Ages to contemporary art. At the evening we had a reception at the City Hall of Nantes.

Thursday 25.4.

On Thursday morning we visited a Kindergarten.

At noon we ate lunch at the high school canteen. The lunch break lasted two hours which was extremely long compared to our 30-minute lunch break in Finland.

Next we had a tour of the high school and we attended the French students' language lessons. In the afternoon we had a welcoming event presented by the Headmaster.

Travelling to Nantes 24.4.2019

Early Wednesday morning we left on train to Helsinki Airport. Everyone got through airport security fine and before we knew it we were on the plane to France. The plane left at 9.25. The flight was quick and we got the luggage easily from the luggage hold.

Once we found our way to the train station the long train ride to Nantes at 1 pm could begin. At first there was a problem with the fitting all the luggage, but at the end everything turned out okay.

After we finally got to Nantes, and found our correspondants, we each went our own way. I and my correspondant family went by car to their house which was 40 minutes out of Nantes. We spent the rest of the evening getting to know each other and eating while watching a movie.
